World poetry day 2016… here goes: Wednesday, March 23, 2016

Oh, I wish I’d looked after me teeth,
And spotted the dangers beneath
All the toffees I chewed,
And the sweet sticky food.
Oh, I wish I’d looked after me teeth.

I wish I’d been that much more willin’
When I had more tooth there than fillin’
To give up gobstoppers,
From respect to me choppers,
And to buy something else with me shillin’.

When I think of the lollies I licked
And the liquorice allsorts I picked,
Sherbet dabs, big and little,
All that hard peanut brittle,
My conscience gets horribly pricked.

My mother, she told me no end,
‘If you got a tooth, you got a friend.’
I was young then, and careless,
My toothbrush was hairless,
I never had much time to spend.

Oh I showed them the toothpaste all right,
I flashed it about late at night,
But up-and-down brushin’
And pokin’ and fussin’
Didn’t seem worth the time – I could bite!

If I’d known I was paving the way
To cavities, caps and decay,
The murder of fillin’s,
Injections and drillin’s,
I’d have thrown all me sherbet away.

So I lie in the old dentist’s chair,
And I gaze up his nose in despair,
And his drill it do whine
In these molars of mine.
‘Two amalgam,’ he’ll say, ‘for in there.’

How I laughed at my mother’s false teeth,
As they foamed in the waters beneath.
But now comes the reckonin’
It’s methey are beckonin’
Oh, I wish I’d looked after me teeth.

Recommendations for healthy eating plan Saturday, January 24, 2015

If you’ve started a healthy eating plan this January then remember that fruit juice isn’t the same as intact fruit and it that it has as much sugar as many popular sugar-drinks. It is also absorbed very fast, so by the time it gets to your stomach your body doesn’t know whether it’s Coca-Cola or orange juice! So …..the recommendation now is to swap it and have a piece of the real fruit. Either way, speaking as a dentist rather than a nutritionalist, it’s worth remembering that the acid softens the top layer of your teeth, so wait 30 mins before brushing, otherwise you will brush off that top white layer, cause abrasion, erosion and yellowing of you teeth by exposing the underlying dentine!

National Smile Month Friday, May 30, 2014

National Smile Month is a oral health campaign which promotes three key messages to help us develop and maintain a healthy mouth. They are:

- Brush your teeth for two minutes twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste
- Cut down on how often you have sugary foods and drinks
- Visit your dentist regularly, as often as they recommend.

The aim of National Smile Month is to ultimately improve the UK’s dental health. It is organised by charity, the British Dental Health Foundation, and the campaign hopes to raise awareness of important health issues.

National Smile Month 2014 (between May 19 and June 19) and it will see hundreds of events up and down the UK to educate communities about the importance of a healthy mouth.
